I'm shaking things up a lot this year over at The Patchwork Pearl, and decided to join The Quilting Gallery's Blog Hop Party as one way of doing so! I'm hoping to welcome new readers here - and on my Facebook page - to come along on the quilting adventure with me.
My blog giveaway is a copy of Sue Pelland Designs new book on Rotary Cut Applique with the Leaves Galore Templates
Sue is a tremedously talented quilter, and I'm very excited about this newest book. I've played around with the templates a lot over the last couple of years, and so I've been waiting to see what she would come up with next. I'll be keeping you posted on the progress...and yes, I will ship internationally if you win.
The Patchwork Pearl is online only - I don't have a shop, although I'm based here in beautiful (snowy) southern New Hampshire. I help quilters connect with one another through retreats, trips and classes. I'm also working on a group of patterns designed around memories - whether they be weddings, birthdays, family reunioins or a event...I have some neat twists in the mix.
My pattern line is evolving slowly...but it is coming.

I've only participated in one day retreats that are local. Just a great time to spend the day focused on quilting.

ReplyDeleteA great quilt retreat would be to go with my friend Joanne Lendaro! But since she lives in New Hampshire now it is kind of hard to do. We did enjoy the ones we got to go to together. At least I did anyway! lol

ReplyDeleteOH I am glad you ask, I am basically new to retreats, I have 2 that I have been to twice in the last 2 years.
ReplyDeleteApart from being able to sew whenever I feel like it and the company, I LOVE the food and not having to prepare it myself for any of the meals for 3 whole days. These have been reasonably small #s at these retreats and I also LOVE having a private room and bathroom at our one retreat.

I've only been to retreats with my church, but our guild does sit-n-sews. I would imagine that a quilt retreat where all the cooking is done and all the time is spent sewing would be like heaven on earth. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

I cannot be of any help with retreats because I have never been to one. With my job and commute, it makes it impossible to belong to a guild.

ReplyDeleteI love retreats and go to several every year. My favorite retreat spots have lots of room for sewing with brightly lit rooms and great food!

ReplyDeleteBeing with my friends makes retreat special. Where we go for retreat doesn't usually matter to me but I do have a favorite place to go...The Compass Centre in Mt. Calm, TX. There they provide great food and fabric shopping 24 hours a day on site.

I have never been to a quilt retreat but I would guess what would be important to me is the time, (weekends),(not all quilters are retired), cost, and what I was making or learning. I would hate to spend a lot of money for something I didn't like.
ReplyDeleteI have never been to a quilt retreat but my guild is planning one this summer. As I am a guy quilter and most quilters are girls I am not sure while how welcome I will be it took a long time to get my guild SLMQG to warm too me. So time will tell. I will of course bring my wife along so at least she will talk to me.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to a retreat. There's a quilt guild here in the city, but I sincerely don't know when to go there with two little kiddos and the hubbs working at night. The online community is my retreat at the moment.

I've never been on a quilting retreat, but I've read the Jennifer Chiaverini books and her Elm Creek Quilts retreat scenario sounds idyllic to me!
ReplyDeleteI just spent a one night retreat all by myself!! To get away from the snow, and to make sure I was in RI for a lecture, I left a day early, checked myself and my sewing machine into a local hotel, and sewed for 12 hours (between nice meals and a relaxing hot shower!). It was the best!! I hope you enjoy the Rotary Cut Applique book. I loved writing it for all of you!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite retreats have a swap of some sort. I've done Jelly Roll and Block swaps even a greedy gift exchange where we package up all those extra sewing tools and books we've collected and give them away in the white elephant type game. It's fun to see which gift gets stolen the most. My other favorite is the Show and Tell, or Bring and Brag...if you want to call it that. I skipped retreats for the last a few years but have signed up for two this year and a Guild sew-in. Looking forward to the sharing!

ReplyDeleteIt's hard to pick the best part of a quilt retreat, because I love everything about them. I think not having to make meals and the work that actually gets done, not just thought about would be tops. The friendships are up on the top of the list too!
ReplyDeleteHey, we're neighbors...I live in Southern NH too!! It's sew nice to meet new friends along the quilted path of life, and there's lots of opportunity for that on a retreat. I've made many wonderful friends on retreats. My next one is a quilter's bus trip to the AQS's quilt show in Lancaster, Pa - next week!!!!! The best thing about quilt retreats are the inspiring things everyone is working on and all the sharing of ideas and even supplies if you need.

ReplyDeleteWhat makes a retreat special to me is the opportunity to get to know people in a different way. On a recent guild getaway, what started as a superficial chat with a member turned into a deep and meaningful conversation because we were in a mode where we had the time and the opportunity to share. I think that we both came away feeling a bond and connection that we would not have found otherwise. For me it is not about how much I get done, but the quality of the time with the other women. But I do like to get a lot done, too!!!
ReplyDeleteMy friends and I get to go to my bosses condo in Florida twice a year for a mini-retreat. Three to four days of sun, sand, relaxing, sewing, laughing, eating junk food, no rules, no clocks, no worries...just sheer fun! It is amazing how much we each get done while there. I got to meet Sue Pelland at the Houston Quilt Festival and I bought her set of rulers. Have not had time to get them out and try them yet. Great give-a-way, thanks for giving us a chance.

Wi-fi. There are so many resources online that I don't want to be separated from them while I'm at a quilting retreat. What if someone comes with a project or fabric that you fall in love with? Go online and order the pattern or fabric. What if it's 2 a.m and everyone's asleep and you've forgotten the math for quarter-square triangles? Go online.

ReplyDeleteThe retreats I have attended have all been bring your own projects and work on them. That has been lots of fun, but what has really been fun is seeing what other groups are working on and sharing patterns with them.

ReplyDeleteThe interactions with others and I must confess I love prizes throughout the event (for example, at a certain unannounced point in the retreat you give a prize to the person who has made the most blocks, then something later to the someone who can show you a red scrap first)...silly little things really, but I think they are fun.

ReplyDeleteI have only been on one retreat and the best part for me was having the meals made and served by staff so we could concentrate on sewing to our hearts delight! And they were very yummy meals. We also had a selection of supplies/fat quarters which were for sale (on a tab system) and a couple of workshops for little gifts. I really should go on another one soon.

A retreat is made great by the people! Also, lots of table space and equipment (irons, cutting boards, etc). Finally, I like to help others out - informal support and tutorials rather than formal workshops.

ReplyDeleteI've never been to an overnight retreat, but my "home" quilt shop here in Calgary, Canada, has a few in-store retreats each year. We go Friday, Saturday, Sunday -- we laugh, share tips (and thread), learn from each other, eat great food, and sometimes even get some work done.
ReplyDeleteGoing to a quilt retreat is always lots of fun. Some of the special things that I think are great are a little kit of something easy and quick to make, great lighting and enough room to spread out your tools, a comfy chair and also someplace to sit and relax in between sewing.

ReplyDeleteQuilt Retreats are special for several reasons but friends are on the top of the list. Other things- no having to stop and cook, just to eat. I also like time split between learning something new and being able to sew on my own. Thanks for participating in the Quilters' Blog Hop Party.

We have a quilt retreat in a very remote area, there are no cell phones, internet connections or traffic. We have a wonderful time sewing eating great food and laughing.
